L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in muscle cells, naturally produced by the body. Stress, prolonged workouts, dieting, malnutrition can lead to rapid and substantial glutamine depletion and a weakened immune system, in addition to impaired energy and performance.
Well established as an exercise recovery supplement, this amino acid is a contributor to muscle cell volume. In addition to immune system enhancing properties, it promotes regulation of protein synthesis. (Welbourne TC. Increased plasma bicarbonate and growth hormone after an oral glutamine load. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 1995; 61:1058-1061.) ✝
Studies show that glutamine is effective in reducing exercise-induced ammonia in the body. (Bassini-Cameron A, Monteiro A, Gomes A, Werneck-de-Castro JPS, Cameron L. Glutamine protects against increases in blood ammonia in football players in an exercise intensity-dependent way. British Journal of Sports Medicine, 2008; 42(4): 60-266.) ✝
Athletes, from bodybuilders to marathon runners, are increasingly accepting L-Glutamine as an indispensable part of their supplement array.
